The College of Electronic and Information Engineering at Southwest University has a history and can be dated back to the National Women's Teachers College established in 1940. Its academic discipline can be traced back to the Applied Physics offered by the Department of Physics at Southwest Normal University in 1986. In October 1996, the Department of Electronics and Information Engineering of Southwest Normal University was established, and the name of academic program was changed to electronic and information engineering. Then the department became the School of Electronic and Information Engineering in June 2003. After the establishment of Southwest University, the academic program of Electronics and Information Engineering in the School of Engineering and Technology at the former Southwest Agricultural University merged with the present electronic information engineering major, maintaining the name of “Electronic and Information Engineering College”, which was still run by the same team of the School of Physical Science and Technology. In September 2012, the university decided to set up the independent School of Electronic and Information Engineering, Southwest University. It was formally established on December 18, 2012. The dean of the college is Professor Liao Xiaofeng, the “Changjiang Scholar”. The school motto is "Faithful Belief, Ingeuity Pursuit, Extensive Learning, and People Orientation.
The first-class professor Xie Lihui, China's famous electrical specialist, educator, founder of China Association for Science and Technology, China's earliest radar experiment participant, former president of Southwest Normal University, former dean of Chengdu Telecommunications Engineering College, worked and lived here for 8 years.
The college covers three first-level disciplines: electronic science and technology, information and communication engineering, and cyberspace security. It contains four undergraduate majors: electronic information engineering, communication engineering, electronic science and technology, and information security, and a Sino-foreign cooperative independent institution---- Electronic and Information Engineering of West Tower College at Southwest University.
In the college, computer science and technology is the first-level discipline authorized to offer doctorate degree; computer intelligence and information processing is the second-level discipline authorized to offer doctorate degree, and signal and information processing discipline is authorized to offer master degree.
The college has a national research platform: the National Joint Engineering Laboratory for Intelligent Transmission and Control, and three provincial and ministerial key laboratories: Chongqing Key Laboratory of Nonlinear Circuits and Intelligent Information Processing, Chongqing Key Laboratory of Computing like Human Brain and Intelligent Control, Chongqing University Laboratory of the Security of Network and Cloud Computing. The college has built the Institute of Signal and Information Processing, the Institute of Computational Intelligence and Information Security, the Institute of Nonlinear Circuits and Secret Communications, and the Institute of Intelligent Sense and Wireless Communications. ACM Chongqing Branch is affiliated with the College.
The college has a long history of running a school, rich experience, the solid teaching staff, and a complete talent team. There are 12 associate professors (including 3 part-time professors), 17 associate senior engineers and other associate senior professionals, and more than 70% of full-time teachers with doctorates. There are one distinguished professors of “Changjiang Scholars”, one candidate for High-Level Talent Plan sponsored by the Ministry of Education, one scholar of Bashu, 5 talents of New Century sponsored by the Ministry of Education, and 7 doctoral supervisors. Professor Liao Xiaofeng was selected in “the Leading Talent Cultivation Program in Chongqing”. Professor Liao Xiaofeng and Professor Li Chuandong have been on Elsevier's "Highly Cited Scholars" list. There are 1000 full-time on-campus students, including undergraduates, postgraduates, doctoral students.
The school adheres to the prime principle of talent training, focuses on the training goal of “sound personality, solid foundation, outstanding ability and comprehensive quality”, and strives to cultivate students' learning ability, research ability, practical ability, innovative ability and craftsman spirit. Following the training characteristics and laws peculiar to engineering majors, the school fully opens the laboratories to undergraduate, where students can use campus cards to enter the laboratory for independent experiments after application. Students are organized to participate in various competitions, including the National College Student Challenge Cup Competition, the National Undergraduate Electronic Design Competition, the National Undergraduate Mathematical Modeling Contest and the Chongqing MCU Competition, and won several national and municipal awards. The school has fixed undergraduate internship bases, where students come to the company to take up internship together, experience the corporate culture, exercise and improve students' practical and innovative abilities. The college implements the undergraduate tutor system. All professors should give undergraduate classes, realizing the “zero-distance intimate contact” between undergraduates and famous professors.Several undergraduate students are allowed to attend the National University Students Innovation and Entrepreneurship Experimental Project, published academic papers on SCI, and are granted national patents every year. After graduation, they may enter the top-level universities at home or abroad to pursue master's degrees or directly pursue doctoral degrees, some of whom even receive full scholarships from Chinese or foreign governments or schools. Most of the students engage in work like research and development, design, operation and maintenance, and management in the field of electronics and communications. A large number of students enter the Fortune 500 companies.
The school focuses on both teaching and scientific research, actively undertakes research projects from the State, the Ministry of Education and Chongqing, and undertakes national, provincial and ministerial-level industrialization projects. In the past three years, nearly 20 National Natural Science Fund projects and a contractual research funding of more than 20 million yuan have been approved, and more than 100 high-level SCI papers have been published. More than 100 international and domestic patents have been obtained and a patent transfer fee of 300 million yuan has been gained. Students in the school have won many prizes, including the first prize of China Patent Excellence Award, China Outstanding Innovation Patent, Chongqing “Science and Education Booms Yu” Golden Bridge Project, and 1st and 3rd Prize of Natural Science in Chongqing in 2017.
The school attaches great importance to international education, and adopts exchange model of “3+1” and “3+2” with the University of Illinois at Chicago. Students can also participate in university’s various communication and exchange projects associated with the United States, Canada, Australia, Japan, Korea, and Taiwan, Hong Kong and Macau. At the same time, the school also enrolls foreign students at all levels including undergraduate, postgraduate and doctoral students, and actively invites domestic and foreign experts and scholars to give lectures.
The school centres on students, and especially attaches great importance to the employment and entrepreneurship of students. When students step in university and start their entrance education, the school establishes a system of employment guidance and service that combines full participation, whole process tracking, and professional ability training, starting from professional guidance and career planning, to a job-seeking lecture hall, vocational ability training, public relations etiquette lectures, and employment career skills guidance, etc. The rate of admission into higher schools is over 20%, and the employment rate has always excelled in the university.
